A CARBON NEUTRAL ISLAY BY 2040

Islay is part of the Carbon Neutral Islands (CNI) project, which aims to explore the challenges to decarbonising islands on a path to net-zero emissions by 2040.

Islay is one of six pioneering Scottish islands in the Scottish Government’s Carbon Neutral Islands (CNI) programme.

The aim is to understand the challenges to decarbonising islands and develop innovative ways to reduce emissions.

NET-ZERO FOR 2040

The Goal

The ultimate goal is for Islay to reach net-zero emissions by 2040 – five years earlier than Scotland’s overall goal of 2045. Carbon neutral, or ‘net-zero’, means that our greenhouse gas emissions are balanced with the amount of greenhouse gases that are captured.

The Action Plan

The first stage involved a range of carbon audits, supported by a wealth of community experts and local knowledge. These highlighted some of the major challenges for Islay, and with ongoing community engagement, have helped develop the first draft of Islay’s Community Climate Action Plan.

Our Progress

Guided by a local steering group of representatives, the CNI project on Islay is managed by Islay Energy Trust and supported by Community Energy Scotland. As the project develops, we will update on progress here as well as on our Facebook page
